TAVARES — In an effort to make this Christmas more magical for families looking to adopt a pet, the Lake County Animal Shelter is hosting Operation Santa Paws.

Pets adopted between Monday and Wednesday can schedule their pet to be delivered by one of Santa’s elves to their home on Christmas Eve at no additional cost.

“Our hope through these promotions is to find ‘furever homes’ for our homeless pets this holiday season,” Whitney Boylston, director of the Lake County Animal Shelter, said. “We would love for all of our pets to have a home for the holidays.”

The shelter is currently packed with dogs and cats available for adoption. In fact, shelter currently has the most cats its ever had at one time. The influx came largely from two recent rescues: One in which 60 cats were found in a single residence and another with 30 cats.

“Our adoptions have been strong through the holidays but we still have hundreds of animals available,” Boylston said. “Our Operation Santa Paws helps parents give a lasting impression on their children with their pet is hand delivered by Santa’s elf. It gives it an element of magic.”

Pawtificates are also available in the event you don’t find the perfect pet the first time, which can be used any time of the year. They are $10 for two cats or $20 for a dog. Pet adoptions include vaccinations, microchip, personalized identification card, spay or neuter procedures and a lifetime of love.

According to Boylston, the giving spirit has been going around because many have been sponsoring pets, which waives their adoption fee.

“Some people who can’t have a pet or just want to help pets become adopted will pay their adoption fee so someone else can adopt them,” Boylston said. “Sometimes, people will even pay it forward and in return, sponsor another pet for someone else. It’s a beautiful thing.”

The shelter is encouraging families who are looking to get a pet for Christmas to consider adopting.

“We want all our lovable pets to have a home for the holidays and beyond,” Boylston said.

Space is limited. The shelter, located at 12280 County Road 448 in Tavares, is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 6 p……..
